On a new setup, is it better to install onto SSD and have data pool on separate drives, if so, should/can I raid1 the boot ssd devices?

many people will say that it's not necessary. and it's probably not.

but I did it anyway lol. I use 2x 32GB M.2 SATA SSDs. they're cheap.

This is not an option. It's required.

ZFS mirroring of the boot devices is relatively common. However, in some cases, failure of the primary boot device can render the host unbootable, because the PC "sees" the first disk but cannot successfully boot from it.

Ok got bored with this. This may be more than you wanted or needed, but I wrote a resource that covers a great strategy for this. Please see

I ABSOLUTELY ASK FOR FEEDBACK ABOUT THE CLARITY OF MY RESOURCES. If you are not getting the point, it is probably because I have been stupid and have failed to adequately explain. Let me know of any rough patches. I write this stuff to help people do cool stuff, and if they can't do the cool stuff I envision, then I suck.
