Hey there forums, I'm relatively new to using networked attached storage and I recently built myself a 12TB NAS.
I'm wondering if there's a way to access the NAS in another city or in another country, sort of like a server.
This would honestly be really helpful for my family as my father works in Europe but my family is based in the United States.

You can safely share your FreeNAS data, but to do so (safely!) requires a good firewall and/or a VPN connection. You most certainly don't want to expose your FreeNAS server on the internet unprotected!

There are many ways of doing this. For example:
  • Install the NextCloud plugin, to provide a browser-based interface for remote clients. Then forward a port through your router to the NextCloud plugin.
  • Enable VPN on your router, so VPN remote clients can natively access SMB shares.
  • Use Cloud Sync to replicate your data to a family-accessible OneDrive.

When I try to install the NextCloud plugin I get this error:
"Error: NextCloud had a failure Exception: RuntimeError Message: pkg.FreeBSD.org could not be reached via DNS, check NextCloud's network configuration Partial plugin destroyed"
This is while using DHCP, using NAT it will install but it gives me a 172.16.x.x IP and it wont let me login.

I'm a noob in these,
but I think the easiest way to achieve this (remote access to NAS) and also have a high level of security
is to use a router capable of running a VPN server.
